“Now you are older, what do you think the purpose of life is?” this was the question my friend was asked on their birthday recently.
That seemed a good question – it got me thinking. What would my answer be? (if I was asked) What is a simple answer? (if there is one)
I thought of my answer – my current favourite (I’m sure it will change). I will share it at the bottom of this. But first ….
What would you say the purpose of life is? The purpose of YOUR life?
I did some ‘deep’ online research 🙂 to find out what other people have said the purpose of life is – here are some good/interesting ones –
Love is our true destiny. We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone – we find it with another. Thomas Merton
For me life is continuously being hungry. The meaning of life is not simply to exist, to survive, but to move ahead, to go up, to achieve, to conquer. Arnold Schwarzenegger (this sounds like what Terminator might say too – although it is more scary when an AI is saying it)
Life is without meaning. You bring the meaning to it. The meaning of life is whatever you ascribe it to be. Being alive is the meaning. Joseph Campbell
We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives. Toni Morrison
I’m not searching for the meaning of life, but I’m looking for a meaning within my life. David Lowery
To help other people. Mother Teresa
I think essentially the meaning of life is probably the journey and not really any one thing or an outcome or a result. I think it’s kinda the process and I think that if you can find happiness in the process then maybe that’s it. Charisma Carpenter
I like to tell people, ‘Don’t take life too seriously’ because you’ll cloud the experience. That’s what the meaning of life is to me – being able to enjoy the moment. Janine Shepherd
For the meaning of life differs from man to man, from day to day and from hour to hour. What matters, therefore, is not the meaning of life in general but rather the specific meaning of a person’s life at a given moment. Viktor Frankl
The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.
The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.
You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self, to live out your purpose, and to do it courageously.
The purpose of life is to contribute in some way to making things better.
The purpose of life is a life of purpose.
To think what is true, to sense what is beautiful and to want what is good, hereby the spirit finds purpose of a life in reason.
The purpose of life is to live, learn, and love.
Purpose of life is to generate more love, peace and harmony in the world.
AND now mine – To connect with our creator and partner together to recreate the world.
Whats yours???? …..
The expression of Perfection of God works in progress in men etc. by Chukwu Johnson Egiri
The Purpose of all life is to reproduce. Without reproduction, there is only extinction. Reproduction is more than just having young. It is reproducing our moral and knowledgable traits in the young. Teach our young to love, accept, understand, and to get along with others, no matter their race, for they are people also. Teach the young to be good neighbors and friends, and teach them let the Lord God do all the judging. And remember if we leave any of these out it will become extinct.
What gives meaning to life?, “Memories”. For life has no meaning without memories.
The purpose of life I think is, to fulfill the purpose by which God put me on this earth.
